Long day

Today was a pretty long day at the hospital. It was busy, but there was just enough time in between that it dragged a bit, but I still learned a bunch! First I saw a cat that was going home that had an oesophagostomy tube that we had to take out because it had fractured its jaw. While prepping the cat to go home we pulled 210 ml of urine out of it! That was pretty crazy. Then we were supposed to do a cruciate repair, but after doing an assessment we determined that we didn't actually have to do the surgery, which was good for the dog, but a little boring for me. Then I got to sit in on an eco with a super cute chihuahua. It had a murmur that even I could hear! And it ended up having a PDA and it was really cool to see it! Then we did an eco on a massive, and I mean massive, cat. He was super cuddly, and we were investigating a murmur they found during a routine check for a pre-dental. It ended up that he had SAM, which is a systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve. Apparently its common in cats that have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, so I learned something new! Then I saw some crystals in some dog urine, very cool, and some rads of a dog with lumbosacral stenosis. We talked about some bloods with one of the vets and my path knowledge hasn't totally fallen out of my head yet, so that was all good. Then I saw a broncho-alveolar lavage, which was super cool! It's one of those procedures that are sort of thrown into our lectures as something you can do, but it seemed so difficult and dangerous it was really interesting to actually see one! Fortunately the cat is (as far as I know) recovering well, he was trying to escape from the oxygen box and looked pretty pleased in his litter box when I left. After that we had a little tutorial with the ultrasonographer who works there looking at various radiographs of different bone tumours which was really interesting and super helpful! Then at the end of the day we unfortunately had to euthanise a really super puppy who came in yesterday and just had a heap of problems. I was pretty sad that she had to be put to sleep, but she was having issues and it didn't really seem like it was going to be feasible to fix a lot of them, so I wasn't terribly surprised. After that there wasn't much to do, so I headed home for some much needed rest! Also mom and kel left this morning so now my flats a little quiet, and since Ash leaves tomorrow it's going to get even quieter! Its going to be weird!
Also I got my 5th year schedule!! Woot!
