Working Nights!

I've started my night shift at the emergency place and FINALLY stuff is coming in! And since it was steady, but not totally slammed with actual emergencies the head night vet let me do the clinical exams, take the histories, and do my own write ups! It was great! Also I diagnosed a crazy loud heart murmur and that this dog had decompensated and had a belly full of fluid, he even let me do the ultrasound! So I got to basically do the whole thing from start to finish, which was awesome. Though its still sad to do emergency, a dog came in that he injured his back jumping and couldn't use his back legs. We ended up having to euthanize him, which was really sad, the owners were gutted, and it was tough because there wasn't anything so obviously wrong on radiograph where we could definitively say heres the problem, but the prognosis was guarded and there was no guarantee that he would be able to walk again. There was also a cat was a really bad hock fracture, I wish we could have taken radiographs, but they were a PDSA patient so we can't do much to treat them because it would be charging the charity a lot of money. There was also a blocked cat and I heard there was an abscess that came in but I didn't see that, alas. There was so much coming in I ended up staying later than the subway ran, so I ended up taking a taxi home, but it was nice to finally see some cases and grow in my confidence level! Hopefully more stuff comes in tonight! Though these nights may totally mess up my sleep schedule, I went to bed at 2 and woke up at noon! Also I booked 2 more weeks of EMS at the end of the summer to see some small animal practice about an hour away from the flat so by the end of the summer I'll have 19 weeks of clinical EMS (assuming that school counts it all) so that puts me in a pretty good place going into 5th year! I'll only need 7 weeks and I have 16 weeks blocked off to do it!
