Yosemite!

The last few days of the week on EMS were fun. On Friday we preg checked a bunch of cows and the vet I was with let me go in first and the checked if I was right or not. There were a few I was wrong and one with a bunch of adhesions I couldnt feel anything, but I'm definitely getting better and its good to know that what I think I'm feeling is right! Then I left a bit early since there was nothing on a drove to Yosemite! It didn't take too long, but up there there was snow! And I drove into this big cloud bank which was worrying becuase I didn't really have anything in the way of winter wear. Fortunately Sat the weather was amazing! I hiked up to Nevada falls and back down by Verna falls and the whole trip was beautiful, I dont know why its taken me so long to get up there! I stayed in a little tarp cabin thing that was really all I needed and they had a restaurant and bar there, so it was all pretty fancy by my standards! I think it was one of my favourite EMS get-aways and I'm going to need to go back for sure! Now I'm just back at the practice prepping for my early day tomorrow!

Up before the cows!

Today I was up bright and early at 4am! When we arrived at the farm the cows were still sleeping, so you know it was early! I'm upping my PD game and starting to manipulate the repro tract and feeling new things and I used my left arm today so that was new, and a nice rest for my right! Them we went and vaccinated some calves. Afterwards I worked in the milk lab a bit and reading plates and looking at total proteins. Then I went with a vet to the sales yard where we thought there were going to be on a few calves to check, but in reality there were over 200! It was certainly a different world at the sales yard, maybe not my very favourite part of this job, but so far everyone here is really nice and helping me learn a bunch! I even learned a new type of organism that causes mastitis! Also I passed all my exams (all As by some miracle) so I'm OFFICIALLY in my 5th year!!!!! So excited for this upcoming year now that its finally here!

Rectals!

Today we had another early start (late by comparison) and did a bunch of PDs at a farm pretty close to the practice. I'm hoping that by the end of this my palpation will be much better, though I'm a little rust at the moment and sometimes its still hard to figure out whats going on in there, but getting there! Then they had me take the spare truck to go an help with some hernias again, so I did another one! This one was MUCH better than yesterdays, it looked less wonky so improvement! It was also a weird one, the stalk of the umbilicus was all attached and adhered to the omentum so it look ed really crazy, but they helped me sort through it since I felt it and was like what is happening in here? Tomorrow I'm up at 4am! This job is turning me into a morning person I guess!

First day of EMS!

We'll I'm at least pretending that its summer and its my first day of EMS here in CA! I started bright and early at 6:30 (and thats a late start!) and we headed out to a farm to do some umbilical hernia repairs. I got to watch the first one, and then I got to do one on my own! It took a while (my incision was larger than it should have been) but in the end the calf got up and didn't bleed to death so yay! Then we went to the sales yard and the vet I was with PD'd some cows for sale. Then we went back to the practice and that was pretty much the day. It seems like the schedule is mostly morning heavy but when you're back in the afternoons its done more or less. I helped them in the milk lab a bit and that was interesting to see since I dont think we do much in the way of milk plates in Glasgow. So depending on what tomorrow is like I may explore some of the town, though its cinco de mayo and it may be a bit crazy, but I hear there is good Mexican food round here so we'll see! The place is really nice though and the bed is super comfy! And since I'm still a bit jet lagged I'm probably going to crash pretty early tonight to gear up for tomorrow!

Homeward bound!

So this past week has been induction week. It's been a week of mixed emotions let me tell you, but it's nice to be done! We learned about 5th year, but we don't know if we passed 4th year so it's been a bit bitter sweet. Also we all found out on tues that Kenya pass away so that was really sad for all of us, but at least she went quickly and we're going to have a ceremony of some sort eventually. We found out our OSCE grades and I passed that which was good, but the we
Don't know anything about the rest of them so we're all still a little stressed, so who knows! Now I'm heading back to CA (hopefully for 3 months and not just 2 weeks to go do re-sits!) and I'm going to do a bunch of farm EMS and PD a bunch of cows! I'm really excited to go
Home, especially after the SNOW that we had this week!! Bananas! 5th year sounds like it's going to be really fun so here's hoping we all make it there!
Before induction week andy and I went canoeing around Stirling which was really fun! It was sunny and glorious! And then the next day we went to Loch Lomond and did a walking acting tour of Macbeth. Basically we Wales around a little worded area while actors did Macbeth. It was actually really fun and funny since they had the audience get involved and andy had to be banquoe the whole time so that was pretty funny! So a good weekend to enjoy that rare Scottish ah shine! (Though it did hail briefly, standard)
Here's some pics of the new flat and canoeing!
