First week on ECC done!

This is the end of my first week on ECC at the small animal hospital and its been a crazy week! The first day was a bit mental but after that things smoothed out a bit and theres a much better flow going on now. I'm working Sat so hopefully its not too full of a day and we get some time to ourselves, and to decompress before next week (more like study so I don't look like a complete idiot) so we shall see!

Starting rotation #2!

Today I started my ECC rotation at the small animal hospital. At first it was a bit overwhelming, its a big place and they all expect a lot from us, but once we got going it was a bit better. At the moment I have 2 cases and I'm on consults tomorrow, so I may pick up a third. Last week I was at Lanark and it was really fun. I couldnt blog because the internet was SO SLOW, but it was a good week. I did a tup vasectomy and some calvings, helped deliver twins! Other than that just bits and bobs really, took bloods on 200 ewes and did herd checks and such. It was a really fun rotation, so hopefully this one will be too!

Herd visits

This week we've been on herd visits and its been really fun! A few very early morning starts (5:50am) but its been nice to get out to the farms again and pregnancy diagnose (PD) some cows! So far all my palpation skills have come in handy and its been fun to check my work so to speak with the ultrasound scanner. I passed my 2nd DOP today (vaginal exam) so I'm all done with those for this rotation, which is a huge relief! It was also so sunny and lovely today and we got to have a cup of tea with the farmer after the visit AND he had a rotary parlor and we got to see it in action, so cool! Tomorrow should be a fairly short visit and I think we'll be done at a reasonable time, so that'll be nice to get some stuff sorted for next week. Other than that not much going on here!

First half down!

As of today I'm pretty much finished at the Galloway for this rotation, though we have treatments still on Monday to do. Its been a really fun 2 weeks and its sad that its ending. I've had a really awesome group of people to work with and even the professors liked us a lot and we all went to the Lock on Friday for drinks with some of the residents! My exit evaluation went well and then the next day I was right about this sheep having a brain abscess and where they were so that was pretty cool, even though when I was discussing with the clinician she looked at me like I was nuts, but it worked out. Yesterday I put a trochar in a bloated calf so that was pretty cool, our lame calf is so much better and hes getting really big, and we did a DA surgery on a cow and shes still alive so thats good. Next week I'm on herd visits so we'll be preg checking and I can do my other DOP which is vaginal exam, so I need to look up metritis scoring for that. Monday we have a surgery practical so that should be fun and I think we might get to practice a caesarian. Other than that really I've just been working, so I dont know how interesting it is!

One week down

So even though I'm already technically 3 months into 5th year, I'm one week down into my first rotation! Its been really fun, tiring, and interesting working in the production animal unit here. We're really given a lot of independence and case responsibility which is really cool, plus I get to play with cows and sheep all day. We've had some really cool cases, and some on PM that were a little underwhelming, though its still a good learning experience. On call this week I got to go to a LDA, which took 4 hours and was bananas inside, but I checked on her today and despite being opened up a 2nd time shes doing well! Hopefully she lives! And I'm on call today so I did treatments in the morning and currently I'm in the library doing work until its time for the night checks and calf feedings. So far its going well, passed my first DOP and passed (though it was boarderline) my CPE, so I think I'll do that again this week to improve on some of the things that I left out. I hear we're getting a few more cases in next week so hopefully its a another full week here!
